Hello All,

Well that was an experience. BTC Velocity has passed the inversion and self righting test, but not without incident........

At 10:30 yesterday morning a Correia construction barge attached a sling to BTC Velocity's keel and Francis Mahoney of Triangle Rigging and myself locked ourselves inside and gave the signal, via radio to begin turning us upside down. What a feeling. In slow motion as the yacht slowly goes completely the wrong way up.

Once you get orientated there are many questions to ask in this unfamiliar territory for a sailor. Will we come straight upright ?? Will the plans for bringing us back upright work ?? Are there any leaks ??

In reverse order, yes there were leaks and they were a little disconcerting. Water was streaming in through the B & G instrument mounts. This is only shows that the amount of bedding compound put in place was insufficient to stem the pressure from the outside and they were at a depth of 2 feet. So as the water began to fill around our feet, we began to pump water into the port water ballast tank. This was hot work in our upside world. After 20 minutes of pumping we heard a loud bang followed by a stream of gushing water into the aft compartment. I stuck my head through to see the cause but could not figure it out. Later it was determined that the hatch cover sealing the engine starting panel gave way under pressure at the seals and was not closed tight enough.

Luckily this water stopped after about 40 liters came in. Phew !! We kept pumping. In between pumping sessions I would jump on the cabin roof to help induce a roll. After 25 mins of pumping and with 100 liters in the water ballast pumped in there was a 5 degree list to port. Then it happened in about 5 seconds. The boat began to turn and Francis and I grabbed anything we could, came upright in a flash and it was over !!!

It was somewhat surreal looking through hatches and skylights and the sea below like some personal aquarium, hoping that the batteries and engine are in fact secured correctly as they are right above your head !! In my life I have done some interesting things; however, this ranks up there with Bungee Jumping, once is definitely enough !!
