| LEARN AROUND THE WORLD 2002 BUEI EDUCATION INITIATIVE The Learn Around the World 2002 has been funded by an anonymous sponsor and the ACE and XL Foundations. The first component of the Education Initiative was a BTC/BUEI Essay contest. The winners of the essay contest were chosen from their schools and from the BUEI/Youth & Sport After School Program. They wrote on topics such as Why I would like to sail with Alan Paris and Why I think Alans sail around the world is so important to Bermuda. One of the winners, Megan Diel, wrote, I think Alans sail is important because it shows that even though Bermuda is small, Bermudians can go off and do big things. All the winners will get the opportunity to sail with Alan. As Alan sails around the world in the Around Alone Race in September 2002, sixteen schools and the BUEI After School program will follow Alan via a special tracking computer program called Virtual Spectator. This will allow teachers to pinpoint Alans location at any time and will challenge the students to discuss decisions that Alan will need to make regarding weather conditions, and other routing considerations. The students will also discuss many other details for Alans trip and will be able to communicate with Alan through the BUEI using e-mail and in some cases, voice communications. Alan has already begun work with the schools and has visited most. He plans to visit all of the participating schools and will deliver to them large maps donated by the National Geographic which will allow the students to track Alans position. The students will also be following a multi-disciplinary syllabus, which will include topics such as marine science and geography. The seventeen participating schools are:
