Concept:

When embarking on the initial stages of an Around Alone campaign, it is critical to find the right vessel in which to compete in this grueling adventure.

  • Elements are whether to purchase an existing production design and to strengthen and make it possible to be handled by one person
  • Purchase an existing singlehanded design that has entered previous races
  • Or commission a custom yacht ensuring the highest levels of current design, safety and construction methods

The Bermuda Solo Campaign chose the new boat concept. This was mainly based on the fact that many existing designs were not built to the current safety rules and or were more expensive that building a custom design, that has exactly what is required and not any extraneous items more suited to cruising than racing.

Designer:

There is only a small group of designers who specialize in Open Class design for Singlehanded sailing. They are based throughout the world with a concentration in France, England and the United Sates; however, there is Scott Jutson, of Jutson Yacht Design based in Sydney, Australia who has quietly produced race winning Open Class designs.

Scott Jutson is the Chief Designer and CEO along with a great team, including Rob Garth who is a graduate of RMIT Aerospace Engineering program. Another Jutson design, True Blue, won Class II of the 1994 Around Alone race with David Adams as the Solo skipper.

In March 1999. Alan Paris and Scott Jutson met in Sydney, Australia and after a series of discussions, design was commenced in August 2000. The Bermuda Solo Campaign has assembled the worlds best in Scott Jutson as Chief Designer, Rob Garth who has engineered the keel with its unique ‘ trim tab ‘ configuration and David Adams has been brought on board as the sailing coach for Alan Paris.
